July 2015

Applewood Homecare are delighted to see Alone’s Home First Campaign 2015 focused on lobbying to support the concept of older people ageing at home. It is quite stark to read their evidence that more than one third of older people in long-term nursing homes beds have low/ medium dependency needs which could be addressed with adequate homecare and that the current approach to older persons service has 57% of the budget being allocated to 6% of the older population.

Older persons like any other people have no desire to be forced to leave their homes and community because they have reached an inevitable stage of life and as a society we should work harder to enable people’s wishes especially as the data is showing that the approach of supporting people to remain in their homes is actually more economically sound then the alternative of institutionalisation.

Many of our clients have returned to their own homes and it has worked out to be very successful especially where their family and representatives are all onboard with their support. I am especially delighted to be involved in increasing community initiatives in our locality that provide activities for older persons and other home cared for people to facilitate variety in their days and afford opportunities for interaction with their friends and neighbours. By 2026 16% of the population will be over 65 years of age – as it is at present it is 11% of the population.

What would you wish for yourself when you get there?
