Applewood Homecare are delighted to learn of the new joint initiative involving Trinity College Dublin and University of California San Francisco aimed at tackling the growing dementia epidemic. This ‘Brain Health Institute’ initiative which is sponsored by Atlantic Philanthropies involves the training of hundreds of health professionals over 15 years, to engage in dementia research, to deliver healthcare and change policies and practices around the treatment of the disease.
One ambition over the period is to develop 600 health professionals to be leaders in dementia related healthcare globally. In addition it is planned to have a scholars programme to train journalists, managers and filmmakers to teach others about the preventable causes of cognitive impairment. Training for both programmes will be multi-disciplinary, including geriatrics, cognitive neuroscience, public policy, health economics, health law and communications.
This can only be received as fantastic news in the fight against an epidemic which research shows that up to 30% of new cases may be preventable through changes in diet, exercise, mental stimulation and tackling risk factors such as diabetes and heart disease.
